Chartering and port constraints in West Africa

The choice between voyage and time charter depends less on freight rates than on how predictable port turnaround is.

Chartering economics in West Africa are dominated by a variable that standard models understate: the variability of port turnaround time.

Voyage charter: the risk stays with the owner

On a voyage charter, demurrage bounds the risk but does not remove it. Where port congestion is structural rather than incidental, the freight rate demanded carries a premium that can exceed the saving sought.

Time charter: trading duration against flexibility

A time charter passes commercial employment to the charterer and absorbs turnaround variability. It assumes, in exchange, a lifting programme dense enough to absorb the idle periods.

Contract of affreightment

Between the two, a commitment on total tonnage split across several voyages suits regular programmes without tying up a vessel.
